California Governor Jerry Brown has a sweeping new budget proposal that calls for cutting back on union benefits for state workers. Brown outlined his long-term vision for turning around California on Thursday with his plan to move new state workers to a hybrid retirement system where guaranteed benefits are combined with a 401(k)-style plan. Civil state employees hired after the plan takes effect would be eligible for full retirement benefits at 67, instead of 60. He also wants current employees to contribute at least half of the cost of their pension benefits.

TODAY’S QUERIES & ANSWERS:
Q. What’s your opinion on Rick Perry saying he’s going to bow
out of a lot of debates? (Kenny ~
Prescott, AZ)
A. That’s exactly what you should do when you’re sinking in
the polls; reduce your exposure to a national audience. He must be a closet Democrat. Oh? He
was a Democrat?
Q. I hear there may be two
third parties, in other words four
parties, by the time this election is over?
(Megan ~ Atlanta, GA)
A. There’s a group of well-heeled Democrats going after
Hillary with Bloomberg for VP; there remains the possibility that Trump could
jump in with Bachmann or Palin. Any way
you slice the cake, Cain seems to be in charge at this point.
Q. There surely was a lot of traffic in Burney on Thursday
night. What happened? (Benny ~ Burney, CA)
A. CHP diverted I-5 traffic at Mt. Shasta City through Burney
and back down the hill to Redding because, as I understand it, some guy shot a
police dog and a chase ensued down I-5. The
dog is fine. The guy ended up in an accident,
was shot and shot back, and that’s all I know about that, except that several
CHP vehicles were casualties. The guy
was flown to the hospital and is in guarded condition at Mercy Hospital. The diversion lasted about seven hours and
had traffic backed up for about 40 miles.
